The Pali Institute has started Pali - Kannada Dictionary Project with the view to promote Pali language and literature in the state of Karnataka.
The first volume of the dictionary is available in all university libraries and state libraries. Academic and Research Institutions who are interested in procuring a copy are requested to get in touch with the Chairman.
A concise Pali-Kannada dictionary has been published by the Pali Institute for the benefit of students and researchers who may need it as a ready reckoner.
The second volume of the dictionary was released in August, 2024.
The third volume of the dictionary is scheduled to be released 19th October, 2024.
Background
Pali is one amongst the ancient languages of India. It is believed to be a contemporaneous language of Sanskrit and Prakrit, and has been in existence since the 5th century BC according to many scholars. Proposal
The project is expected to result in the publication of about 12 volumes of the Pali-Kannada dictionary which will be as comprehensive as possible.
The second Governing Council meeting of the Pali Institute decided to set up an advisory committee for the project. The project is being headed by Prof. Mallepuram G. Venkatesh, Former Vice Chancellor, Karnataka Samskrutha University who will also be the chairman for the advisory committee.

Since Pali is widely believed to be the language of the common and lay people, many texts of common lore and folk tales, like the Jataka Tales were written in Pali. It is also possible that factual notes that may be of historical and cultural significance may also be available in Pali. Important texts of Buddhism and Buddhist literature are all predominantly in Pali. Several of these texts including the Tripitakas have not been translated to Kannada. In order to make the texts accessible, we would need to translate these texts to the local language and this requires the development of a Pali-Kannada dictionary on the lines of the Sanskrit-English dictionary.

The Pali Institute in association with the Karnataka Samskrit University, Bangalore is developing computational tools for the analysis of Pali Language.
Background
The growing interest in reading Pali text, due to the increasing interest of people in Buddhist philosophy has created a demand for the Computational Tools to analyse and generate Pali language. The state of art of technology and current trends in computational linguistics enable the reader to access the original text of Pali language by using Computational Tools without the intervention of the translations. Initially we can develop Morphological Analyser and Generator for the Pali language. As the first phase of the entire project a Word Generator will be developed. The first phase of the project is planned to be completed over a year.
The implementation of this project will be led by researchers from the Karnataka Samskrit University and overseen by the Project Director and Principal Investigator.

Pali and Sanskrit Digital Archive
The Pali Institute in association with the Karnataka Samskrit University, Bangalore and other organisations is developing digital archive of ancient Sanskrit, Pali and Prakrit texts for the purpose on internal research.
Background
The growing interest in reading Pali text, due to the increasing interest of people in ancient Indian philosophy written in Sanskrit, Pali, and Prakrit has created a need for development of a digital archive that provides access to ancient texts to research scholars. The state of art of scanning and OCR technology is used to digitise ancient and fragile texts. The project has enabled scholars to access the original texts from their research institutions.
Since many texts have been provided to the Pali Institute due to the courtesy and kindness of other research institutes and private organisations that were involved in the preservation of ancient manuscripts and texts, we regret that we will not be able to provide access to general public via the internet. Research scholars who are interested in any particular text can place a request through the below mentioned email.
